This dichotomy in practice may occur all the way back through elementary school, according to the interest/perspective of each teacher. I know of no particular requirement to develop these skills thoroughly, although it may show up as part of the "workshop" model, but once it has been "taught" it may be "used" without further attention to skill enhancement. That would account for a lot of the variability you saw--not all, since some students probably "know" this without being taught formally, due to family practices or "interpersonal intelligence."NancyHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14875884916058328777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141184724908893158.post-28449080881671882142012-08-24T09:49:37.867-04:002012-08-24T09:49:37.867-04:00Important post Scott. At The Willow School, located in Peapack/Gladstone, which has won several LEED Awards, took this into account when designing the school buildings. At The Willow School, the buildings have been created to be a part of the educational experience and to be used as teaching tools. Large spaces have been provided for multi-purpose functions and most classrooms lead directly to the outdoors so learning can easily transfer outside the four walls of the classroom when necessary. The building’s design foster students, faculty and staff to collaborate with each other and their immediate surroundings. As a result, the educational experience is interactive and integrated encouraging critical and creative thinking.
The notion that the physical building is compartmentalized and not interactive is an antiquated idea. The building itself, along with its surrounding area, represents a whole system and a whole system must work in a collaborative way to sustain itself and develop solutions for each part of the system.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141184724908893158.post-16752431359262372492012-01-01T13:47:32.840-05:002012-01-01T13:47:32.840-05:00The consequence is a that learners never fully exp...The consequence is a that learners never fully explore the problem solving process. Additionally, it is hard to engage in reflective moments and take time to assess how one learns.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16408257416126409823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141184724908893158.post-38705989638152591552011-12-31T14:17:17.909-05:002011-12-31T14:17:17.909-05:00Having had the opportunity to discuss this same is...Having had the opportunity to discuss this same issue at length when you visited my classroom, I would like to suggest that this need for "re-conditioning" is somehow endemic to the current situation in which education at large finds itself: absent the general ability to enact self-organizing, emergent and chaotic and rhizomatic structures for learning, student curiosity and autonomy is curtailed. The condition is already omnipresent in middle school, so the question here is one that Michael Apple might ask: what is the hidden curriculum at the elementary level; that is, how are we indoctrinating learners to understand learning as an ostensibly receptive condition which requires almost no decision making on the part of the learner? And why do we do so little to alleviate that condition? While the easy answer might be to point at standards, standardization, and industrialized schoolhouse models and all that represents, I'm guessing the answers lie in a much deeper and intricate (complex?) context.

Thus I spend a large part of the first part of each school year "re-conditioning" (I almost like the term, but the Skinnerist overtones are bothersome) learners by granting students the autonomy they so sorely lack (which they reject). And they revolt. The difficulty for me is in steadfastly not providing answers.

"How long should it be?"
Thirteen feet, four inches.

"Is this good?"
I give up, is it?

Forcing the questions back onto the students, demanding they take responsibility for seeing the purpose and scope of their own work, is not comfortable, and can be more than little exhausting and/or frustrating. But well worth the effort. Kudos to your teacher.

One last question: if autonomous classrooms like the one you describe in your post are but small islands in uncharted seas, what is the net consequence for learners?rob cohennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141184724908893158.post-37269453215334943832011-12-04T18:27:57.329-05:002011-12-04T18:27:57.329-05:00Terrific post. Curricula, and therefore curricular goals, are determined external to the learner in the current school configuration. In my experience, students who are empowered to construct their own learning paradigms within negotiated frames will self monitor and self assess until they achieve excellence (defined as reaching their goals). Externally constructed assessments of externally imposed curricula create the need for some to "influence" the system (ie: argue for a better grade).rob cohennoreply@blogger.com
